“Breaking the Chains is the powerful testimony of Laurie Ishii—a once wounded, bound, and extremely broken woman who came into true freedom and peace. Laurie lived through many tragedies, failures, and disappointments and came through to a place of sweet victory and purpose. The journey was not easy, and her freedom did not manifest overnight. When she fell, she would rise up. When she stumbled, she would find her footing again. I have known Laurie for a while now, and I have been impressed by her infectious faith, bold courage, and unwavering love. She truly carries the beautiful fragrance of Christ and constantly reaches out to those who need help and rescue. The book you are holding is a book filled with hope and invitation. If you are struggling with addiction or the fruit of unhealthy choices, this book could very likely be your key to freedom. If you know someone who is wrestling right now, buy them one too! I am.”

Laurie Ishii was born and raised in Los Angeles. At fifteen, she began using drugs, joined an Asian gang, and lived a criminal lifestyle. She left the gang not long after getting shot in a drive-by shooting. Wanting a better life, Laurie went to cosmetology school and became a stylist. Partying with musicians and people in the entertainment industry, she was introduced to crack cocaine and heroin. Heroin became her drug of choice, and she began prostituting to support her habit. After four years of prostituting, she attempted suicide by jumping off the roof of her eight-story apartment building. She suffered brain damage, broke her back, and had to learn how to read and write again. In 2000, she got clean, and in 2010, Laurie was diagnosed with third-stage breast cancer. After surgery and cancer treatment, she relapsed on opiates, lost her apartment, and lived in a tent on Skid Row in downtown LA for almost four years until she cried out to Jesus, who began to heal her and helped her get off the street. Laurie has always been a passionate evangelist, and she currently volunteers with the Los Angeles Dream Center, where she goes on the Skid Row outreach with Adopt-a-Block on Saturdays, reaching out and sharing the love of Jesus with addicts, the homeless, and other people she meets on the street. She also serves part-time with the Women’s Dream Center Discipleship program.
